Canvas and Coffee
“Everyone’s an artist!” encouraged the volunteers of the Student Activities Board (SAB) as a line of people shuffled into the Student Center Ballroom. On Oct. 18, 2018, the students and faculty of UCA were invited to attend the annual event “Canvas and Coffee,” which took place during both X-Period and at 7 p.m. With everything provided to them, participants young and old grabbed blank canvases and free specialty coffee as they piled in and got ready to paint along with instructor Lori Cullum.
Cullum, who partnered with Zeteo coffee for the event, spoke on its popularity. When asked how she got involved with the event, she told about her friendship with SAB director Kendra Regehr. “I usually teach art lessons to kids, but Kendra told me I should try it with college students,” Cullum said. Cullum also mentioned her initial hesitation, as she did not know how it would go over with the students. “Teaching college students is a lot different than teaching kids,” she said. To her surprise, after four years now, Canvas and Coffee has become a beloved annual event that almost always fills every available seat.
The base painting this year was fall-themed, featuring pumpkins and a cool-toned background. Paint and brushes were set out on the tables, the colors already provided for the participants. Though the idea was to follow along with the instructor while painting, students were encouraged to take creative liberty and make the painting their own. All around the room, students and faculty alike worked on their masterpieces, occasionally stopping for breaks to take advantage of the free food. By the end of the event, each student left with free coffee, snacks, and a unique work of art, all for no cost.
